U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Saks, met with constituents during the Alabama Farmers Federation’s biennial Washington Legislative Conference in the nation’s capital March 5-7. During breakfast meetings, farmers and their congressman discussed issues of local and national relevance. Rogers is pictured with Talladega County Farmers Federation President Jimmy Hugh White and wife Donna and Sharon and David Wilson.
The Temple of the Children of Peace at Sharon was founded by David Wilson, who formed the Children of Peace as an offshoot of the Quaker Movement. Wilson and his followers were strong supporters of the Reform Movement. The temple itself saw construction from 1825 to 1832, and played a role in the Reform Movement by hosting rallies and meetings of the Society for Constitutional Reform. Even William Lyon MacKenzie was chosen as a reform candidate here. And while the Children of Peace would eventually die out the temple remained, and saved from demolition in 1917. Extensive restoration took place between 1993 and 2011 and today is a museum for both the local pioneer history, the Children of Peace, the reform movement, and the Rebellion.
